Opera Omaha Casting Notice: PROVING UP

Opera Omaha Audition for Role of Peter Zegner
Tuesday, September 19, 2017 | Evening

Opera Omaha is looking for a young male actor/dancer to perform the role of Peter Zegner in an upcoming production of a new opera, Proving Up, written by the creative team of Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek and based upon the short story by Karen Russell.

Part ghost story, part meditation on vindication’s ability to drive us, Proving Up is the tale of the Zegner family and their desire to “prove up,” or legally own the land they’re living on. Set by the Homesteaders Act of 1862, the most difficult obligation to fulfill is the Glass Requirement: every sod house must have a glass window. The Zegners are lucky, they have one, but it is the only window in all of Hox River, and Pa Zegner is intent to share it. As he says, “farmers need to look out for farmers.” The inspector is checking another home today, and Pa sends his son Miles there for two reasons: one, he must help his neighbors by covertly sharing the window between them, and two, he must convince the government man to come to his own family’s homestead. After four years of drought and the deaths of two children, the Zegners might finally prove up.
